Flower Arranging Tips: Keep It Simple!

Let me be clear on this one! I am not a flower arrangement expert.

But… I have had a ton of practice, and it’s one of my favorite things to do.

And my style or my way of arranging is always the same:

  • Use what you have or what is in season locally, of course ;))

  • Pick similar colors or lots of the same type of flower or foliage

  • Pack it in tight (with smaller containers)

  • Keep it loose (with big containers)

I tend to use medium-sized containers because they can go just about anywhere in your home;

dining table, office desk, coffee table, or bedside.

I prefer a neutral container that is not all glass

because I can’t seem to keep the water or the stems looking fresh for very long

Here is a small little grouping of roses in old Roseville pots.

I love this simple small gathering.

Or the little painted rice pots below

Another favorite is old baskets.

I use plastic containers or paint buckets inside the baskets

and for whatever reason, everything looks great in an old basket

Recently I have discovered how much I love using old broken and castoff pottery for succulent arrangements.

I use sort of succulents just like flowers. Lots of odds and ends and a few kinds of vine-y things look great together

Usually there is a bouquet in the kitchen or a pot of something green

Did I say GO BIG? Try it!

It’s a great idea to match flowers to your accent colors like pillows or paints

See what I mean about simple?

When I was writing this, I realized that I like to arrange flowers, just about any shape or size.

I even arranged weeds from my back garden Ojai.

Actually I arranged everything that would stand still long enough to go into a vase!
